Permanent water saving rules

What rules, restrictions and responsibilities are currently in affect for Victorians?

There are a few easy Permanent Water Use Rules we all need to follow. These were introduced in 2011, and are always in place to help manage our water efficiently. These rules let you know how you can use water around the home, garden and business.

Hand-held hose

You can use a hand-held hose but it must be fitted with a trigger nozzle that is leak free.

Fountains and water features

Fountains and water features can be used if they recirculate the water.

Cleaning of hard surfaces

You can clean hard surfaces (including, driveways, paths, concrete, tiles, timber decking) if:

  • cleaning is required as a result of an accident, fire, health hazard, safety hazard or other emergency
  • staining to the surface has developed, and then only once a season (every three months)
  • in the course of construction or renovation.

If required, cleaning can only be by means of a high pressure water cleaning device or if not available a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle or a bucket.

Residential or commercial gardens and lawns

You can water your residential or commercial garden or lawn using a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle or bucket at any time. You can use a watering system between the hours of 6pm and 10am on any day. There are no set watering days.

Public gardens and lawns and playing surfaces

A public garden or lawn area or a playing surface can be watered if using a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle or bucket at any time. A water system fitted with a rain or soil moisture sensor can be used between the hours of 6pm and 10am on any day and in accordance with an approved Water Use Plan.
