Bridge Road Water Main Renewal Project
City West Water is replacing a 300 metre section of water main on Bridge Road, Richmond.
The main is located between Lennox Street and 253 Bridge Road (Bank of Melbourne) under the car parking bays on the north side of Bridge Road (eastbound direction).
The work zones will be approximately 20 metres in length and will situated in the car parking lane and require an open cut trench to remove the old main and install a new one.
Works commenced from 5 February 2018 and are expected to be completed by the end of March 2018.
Following the completion of Bridge Road works, a 110 metre section of water main on Bosisto Street, Richmond will also be replaced.
When are works taking place?
- Works on Bridge Road will involve a mixture of both day and night time to construction hours, to limit the impact on both local residents and retail businesses as much as possible.
- The first stage of works will take place near the corner of Lennox Street at night between 9pm and 5am, Monday to Thursday, and the work zone will extend from the kerb over both east bound traffic lanes. Traffic detours will be in place for eastbound vehicles and tram services will not be impacted.
- Following the completion of the of the first section, construction work on sections of Bridge Road around Bosisto Street are expected to take place during the hours of 7:30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
- Works around the Yarra Trams raised tram stop between Lennox Street and Church Street will take place at night between 9pm and 5am to limit the impact on Yarra Trams services.
Why this upgrade needs to be completed?
The current water main was installed in 1925, and is nearing the end of its design life.
This replacement pipe will ensure our customers continue to receive clean drinking water and meet the growing needs of the community and the vibrant retail precinct.
Will Bridge Road businesses be accessible during construction?
Yes. Pedestrian access to all businesses will be maintained throughout construction and we encourage you to continue to shop locally and support these great business.
Will car parking be reduced?
Yes. Car parking on the north side of Bridge Road will be temporarily disrupted in 20 metres sections to accommodate the work zones. There is no impact to car parking on the south side of Bridge Road and car parking will be reinstated once works are complete.
Will pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles be able to continue to use Bridge Road during construction?
Yes. While there will be temporary disruptions in the local area while the pipeline is installed, traffic management will be in place to assist people moving through the area. The construction team will lay the pipe in small sections at a time, to minimise the extent of disruptions.
